The Arrival of Dawn by Bree Vanderland Review ~Kami

The Arrival of Dawn

by

This book was gifted to me by the author for an honest review. Thank You!

Dawn is chained to a cliff and offered as a sacrifice. But Dawn has the propensity for magic and greatness and is given the choice to end a war and save people from destruction. I thought this was a beautiful story full of magic. Bree Vanderland has a really pretty, gentle, pure writing voice that works well for fantasy. The story itself seems to be a blend of sci-fi and fantasy. There is a spaceship but the Roseians use magic. I thought the blending of the genres made for a very interesting story. There were parts of it that reminded me a lot of Star Wars. A very good beginning for a promising writer. 4 stars.

Fighting Faith by Brandie Buckwine - 5 star review....

This contemporary/ erotic romance is explosive. Eric a sexy as hell musician, and Faith a hot videographer hired to work with Eric's band don't  realize their lives are about to change. The writing is perfect capturing; the love/ hate relationship between Eric and Faith. Their constant arguing, fighting and bickering makes everyone around them uncomfortable but when their alone the sparks fly ....they can't seem to agree on anything except the passion they feel for each other.  The sex scenes are hot as hell, sexy and jaw dropping.  As the reader you root for their relationship to work and pray for a happy ending... I give this story a 5 star review, its sexy as hell...highly recommend this read ...and it's only 99 cents for a short time ....

Finley et al. are on the way to New York in a dirigible to rescue Jasper. Dalton wants Jasper to bring him a device or he will kill Mei, the girl in the clockwork collar. Emily likes both Sam and Jasper, so the addition of Mei, causes some problems. The romantic tension between Finley and Griffin continues. This was such a good continuation of Finley's story. I really like the characters a lot. I like the action, super-human abilities and steampunk gadgets. I am excited to read the next book. 5 stars.

17-year-old Tasmyn has just moved to King, Florida and has started attending a new school. Tasmyn can hear thoughts except, for some reason, her Chemistry teacher, Ms. Lacusta who seems to be able to block her at least in the beginning. Later in the book, Tasmyn doesn't have trouble reading Ms. Lacusta's mind. A mean girl bullies her. Hot guy Michael swoops in to her rescue. I have mixed feelings about characters meeting and turning out to be soul mates. They meet and BOOM in love, happily ever after. It kind of seems like cheating to me for authors to use this. You want your characters to be together, so they fall in love at first sight and are meant to be together. There was a lengthy explanation of why this was happening to Michael and a lengthy explanation of Tasmyn's psychic abilities. It seemed out of character for teenagers to have such lengthy, insightful conversations. It was dragging on for me and the author was losing my interest for a bit. The reveal of black magic happenings in the town was more interesting to me. Halfway through is when this book started to get really good. I liked the action bits the best, they were very exciting. I didn't like the long exposition parts. Plus I thought the Christian undertones were a bit heavy handed. All in all, I liked the majority of it. I have the second book, so I will be sure to read that too. 4 stars.

Frankie and Sandra use Tarot cards and playing cards to locate their missing friend Candice. Frankie is very goth with her makeup. Frankie and Sandra are very powerful in their use of the occult. Candice has gotten herself into serious trouble. This is a well-written novella with good pacing. I liked the magical aspects. 4 stars.

Rhythm in Blue by Tfc Parks

- This book is amazing , it's  like nothing else out there, the writer captures your attention from The beginning and keeps it.  Rick Rowland a hot as hell rock star who's living the rock star life with women, booze and drugs doesn't realize he's missing something in his life until he meets Shelby in Greece preparing for his sisters wedding . Shelby a 15 year old girl to Ricks mid twenties realizes their relationship could never be anything more than friendship but he knows deep in his heart he has a connection to Shelby. She is his rock...but as life intervenes and years go by for both Rick and Shelby. Rick's life spirals out of control and his rock star life catches up to him, he's remembering his abusive father and living on the streets.  Feeling more along than ever., Rick tries to pull himself together but after a few half ass attempts at love and more booze and drugs his band mates rally around him realizing the sadness and emptiness within Rick and how he might not only loose his career but possibly his life . Realizing without Shelby he'll never have happiness but not knowing of her own tragic circumstances , He goes deeper into depression. After years of heartache and emotional issues Rick and Shelby reach out for each other in hopes that love will heal their wounds. This book is like a  roller coaster that brings you down but builds you back up with so much emotion . Love this story, the author writes in such a way you feel part of Ricks and Shelby's life and feel for them, their sadness and happiness. Very touching story

19-year-old Rose belongs to a coven of witches who are feuding with a family of shape shifting druids. Before you can say 'this sort of thing caused problems in Romeo and Juliet and in Dallas too', Rose meets Derek. Three quarters of the way through, my only thought is: 'this is not going to end well'. “My only love sprung from my only hate.” This book is so good that I am mad at myself for not reading it sooner. The writing is excellent. It is a really fast read and I was totally digging it. The coven of witches has a serious hippie commune vibe with names like Mist, Ocean, Rainbow, Wolf Song, Wildflower and Rain. Except they don't have the whole hippie 'love one another' credo, Rose's mother is so cruel and violent. I am pretty sure the Witches Rede is: “An it harm none, do what thou wilt”. I have read enough books and seen enough movies to know that when you start using your powers for evil and to harm others, bad things happen to you and those you care about. I also liked that this book is set in the Northwest, my home town, though I live in Portland, OR not Seattle, WA. Rose hopes Derek likes dogs, ha ha ha funny. I like that Rose uses words like “self-effacing”. Rose is so innocent but she has a dark power. I thought this book at first was tame and young adult but then things started heating up and it got romantic and erotic. I knew this book was going to end on a cliffhanger. I was prepared for it but yet I still screamed: “No!” Lucky for me, I have the second book. 5 stars.

Kenna moves to New Orleans to become an actress instead she works at Cafe du Monde where she meets Arthur. The three rules of being a vampire: “Don't Kill Dinner. Don't feed from people you know and don't tell anyone.” The plant nightshade protects them from the sun. This is a quick, entertaining little read. Kenna quickly agrees to being turned into a vampire and things get interesting with vampire politics. Juicy and complicated plot twists abound. I liked the romance between Kenna and Arthur. And then when things were getting really interesting, it ends! What?! Why?! I was so getting into it and now I have to wait for another book? So unfair. Kenna does some things that I don't exactly approve of but I understand her motives. I will be interested in reading the next book. 4 stars.

These short stories were gifted to me by the author for an honest review. Thank You!

Alien spores are changing Cathy's unborn child. I have only ever heard the term “roundheels” before from my mother. I think that is a 50's saying to describe a so-called “loose” woman. She wears roundheels so that if you tip her over she falls flat on her back. This is a creepy and clever little story. It begins with Cathy's disgrace and ends with an alien invasion. Short but satisfying. 5 stars.

http://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Story-Want-Corners-ebook/dp/B005JZ8XNW/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1363813875&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=is+it+a+ghsot+story+you+want+cindy+sprigg

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17283008-is-it-a-ghost-story-you-wanted

An old woman walks into a tavern and tells a group of horror buffs a story. She tells a story about an ancient alien looking for revenge on humanity. An interesting little tale that is not as gory or creepy as other Sprigg's works that I have read. Mayeria comes across more sad than threatening to me. Or is it just me that feels sorry for the ancient alien? 4 stars.

Susan likes horror stories and likes to put herself into scary, unsafe situations for the thrill. This was an excellent little ghost story. The way the story comes together gave me chills.5 stars.

Revelations of the soul  ( Guild series #2 ) by J.L. Vallance

This story like book 1 - Deep into the soul was amazingly written the characters just get better and better as the book continues. Vivi has Calum with her loving her and protecting her but she senses things are not what they seem and something important they are not sharing with her. Vivi learns secrets as the book continues about a grandfather she didnt know she had and more secrets that lead her to believe even though she trusts the Guild and its now her home,  they still aren't answering all her questions and there are important secrets being held from her. Her nightmares continue to get worse, then her life changes and she's kidnapped by the Daemonium with the help of someone within the guild. Here within the Daemonium world she learns about her gifts and how to harness them and fight with them. She has one ally who keeps her safe but she can't fully trust and will never trust him....here in the world of Daemonium she learns more secrets that the Guild were hiding from her and doesn't understand why. Vivi escapes with some help and finds herself back with Calum and the guild but as her questions mount no answers are revealed to her until she cracks and she begins the search for answers on her own.

Love this story the author has such a great imagination and brings the reader into the story and doesn't release them until the ending begging for more...highly recommend this read and this series....terrific! I cannot wait until book 3...

The Undesirable (Undesirable #1) by S. Celi Review ~Kami

It is the year 2072 and this book starts with a very 1984 feel. There are propaganda signs saying the Party watches over you and to look out for Undesirables. Very reminiscent of Big Brother from the book 1984, not the reality show, just so we're clear. 18-year-old Charlotte has joined The Specialized Secret Resistance. The United States is at war with Canada over oil. People who can't work 12 hour days in sweatshops are killed. I immediately liked Charlotte because she is literary. I love a person who still finds a way to read books in a dystopian, dictatorship, military occupied world. The description of the 4D TV bothered me. The 4th dimension is time. So the TV is a time machine? Always bothers me when they talk about 4D movies with smellavision. I like a good dystopian story. I like the reminder that no matter how bad life is right now, things can be worse. I also like stories about people who have the strength and bravery to rebel and survive against horrible situations and injustice. This is a well written, fast paced story. It is not as gritty as I like my dystopias to be. It started out really exciting but then went down a bit for me. I still liked it, though. This is the beginning of a series so it ends abruptly. 4 stars.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16567625-into-the-dark-vol-3

This book was gifted to me by the author for an honest review. Thank You!

17-year-old Emily has been having seizures and travelling to parallel worlds since she was 13. The parallel worlds are manned by monsters or Misery-Makers. Emily has no recourse against the monsters except running away from them and hiding. Emily has no idea why she can travel to the worlds. She has no idea why the monsters attack her. She just wants a normal life. There wasn't a whole lot of world building in this one since it is the first installment. There is a lot left unclear. I was having some problems with Emily. I think she will probably get stronger as the series progresses. There are a couple mysterious boys that I would like to know more about. The only thing to do is to the read the next installment. 4 stars.

I am not sure why this book was cut up into four parts like it was instead of a novel. I don't understand the logic behind a serial novel like the Green Mile. That said, on to book 3. I am still annoyed with Emily. She is such a silly girl all obsessed with Henry. This is a quick read and I feel that I won't get any satisfying answers until book 4. The book is well written and the pacing is good but I get impatient with Emily. She has allies but she is so stagnant. Her inertia makes me want to shake her so that she will do something! The Alchemist's identity is revealed but not the Logician. I like the cool comic book names. This one ends very abruptly with a serious cliffhanger. 4 stars

The conclusion of this serial novel. Where all is revealed and Emily grows a spine. The first installment is chapters 1-5. The  second installment is chapters 6-13. The  third installment is chapters 14-20. The final installment is  chapters 21-31. This final vignette was my favorite. Everything worked out. 5 stars.

Mercy and Adam are now married. Mercy and her step daughter Jesse are shopping on Black Friday. Something has happened to Adam and the pack. They have been taken by a pseudo government agency. I love the Mercy Thompson series. I used to live in Tri-Cities and I am so unhappy that I never ran into vampires, fae or werewolves while I was there, ha ha. I remember the Tri-Cities as being pretty boring. I love this series and I am still in love with it. Usually by book 7, I get tired of a series. But this one is still going strong. It still keeps me interested enough to keep turning the page. Mercy is a great character. And I like that these books are set in the Tri-Cities where I used to live. Pretty cool to read a book with a spunky, strong female lead set in the Northwest. I live in Portland, OR now. Still haven't run into any vampires. Oh well. 5 stars.

A Beautiful Forever (Beautiful #2) by Lilliana Anderson Review ~Kami

A Beautiful Forever (Beautiful #2)

by

This book takes place right after the first in the series A Beautiful Struggle. Elliot is a personal trainer. Elliot is going to London on a three month work visa. He sees a pretty girl, Paige on the plane. Paige is tough, self-assured and independent. Elliot is very courteous and mannerly. Paige tells Elliot that she isn't interested in getting involved. Paige is very emotionally closed off. She doesn't want to share herself with anyone and she hates talking about herself. Paige is afraid of her past and won't allow herself to get close to anyone. This is such a well written erotic romance. I really liked the first book, but I think Lilliana has outdone herself. This book is amazing. I love the characters so much.  “I think I have I loved you since before I even met you.” “I need her like I need air to breathe, and I’ll be damned if I ever let her go again.” This book started out a little slower than the first one but then it takes off with a bang and I couldn't stop reading it. With a hundred pages to go, I was a nervous mess, chewing my finger nails, sitting on the edge of my seat. Must keep reading and know what happens! I was so tempted to skip ahead. I resisted, but then when I was reaching the end, with four chapters to go, I didn't want to continue reading because I didn't want it to end. Why must you torture me so, Lilliana?! I had such a tumult of emotions reading this book. I oohed and ahhed. I cooed. I swooned. I got tears in my eyes and I laughed out loud. A truly amazing book! 5 stars.

Chasing Sam (Vegas mates # 1) by Krystal Shannon

This is not your everyday shifter story. Sam and Chase both heading home to visit with family, run into each other at the airport, when they touch sparks fly and their wolves know they met their mate...but life isn't that easy. Sam is from a noble bloodline and is expected by her 25 birthday to be hunted by potential suitors who best fit into the status of the Demakis family whoever catches Sam and marks her is who she'll be mated to for life. Sam wants to marry her mate not be unhappy like her mother, she wants a life not to be involved in politics of her bloodline. but in order for Sam and Chase to be together and mate, Chase has to join in the hunt ...like this story a lot , a different take on the typical shifter stories. Only unsure part that wasn't quit explained was when Chase's sister and Sam used to be friends what happened between them and more background on her family in general ...but over all a great read !

 Book Description:
When Talia Lyons was just a child, her parents were murdered before her eyes. Offered a choice between accepting their fate and exacting revenge, Talia trains to become one of the country’s deadliest assassins in order to kill the man responsible for their deaths: Ian Crane. Luckily, Talia was born with a gift- the ability to read and influence the minds of others. At sixteen, Talia is poised to graduate from the McDonough School for the Talented, where she learned to control her abilities. Now there is only one obstacle standing between her and the retribution she craves... Talia herself.

Her greatest asset may also be her undoing; while a formidable weapon in the field, Talia’s talents prevent her from both shutting off the mental connection she shares with her questionable boyfriend and blocking out the thoughts of a beguiling fellow recruit. But Talia can’t afford to have the feelings and distractions of a normal teenage girl, when her life is far from normal.

She must regain the single-minded determination that has brought her this far, or it may cost Talia her life when she finally faces Crane. And even after being molded in to a weapon of war, she’ll still have to find the strength it takes to pull the trigger.

If James Bond and Sookie Stackhouse had a love child with a yearning for vengeance, her story would be TALENTED: an adventure about powerful teenagers who aren’t afraid to embrace their fears and fight for what they believe in.

I love Talented! :)

Here's a bit of the synopsis...
"Talia Lyons is Talented. Born after a nuclear spill, she is part of a new generation that possesses special abilities; Talia can read the minds of others and manipulate their thoughts. Whether Morphers, Light Manipulators or Telekinetics, the Talented are taught to control their abilities under the protective eye of the government- to use their Talents for good. But all Talia wants is revenge."

I don't really read dystopian books, but I find myself enjoying them more & more when I read them, & this one is no exception.

The book is staged in a world much like ours, but where politics are much different (and not explained all that much), & some children grow up with a wealth of different "talents". This book strangely reminds me of a short story I wrote as a kid, where all the kids have magical abilities, including the one Talia Lyons (the main character in Talented) has, the ability to not only read people's thoughts, but manipulate them as well.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about, was there are quite a few storylines in the book that are rather predictable, at least to me, but it didn't make the book any more enjoyable or fun to read. It is a young adult book, after all. I can't wait to read the next book.

There are some minor typos, words missing or written in the wrong order, but nothing major. I usually won't read books if they aren't edited well, but this one only has a few & they don't occur (or at least I didn't see any) until the latter half of the book.

I received a review copy of this book for free.
