Jessica is waiting for the bus at the
crack of dawn when she sees a mysterious man wearing a cloak. In her
mind she hears the man call her by her birth name: Antanasia. Lucius
Vladescu is the imposing foreign exchange student in Jessica's
English class who seems rather interested in her bleeding finger when
she gets a paper cut.
In this age of Twilight and True Blood,
I would think any European stranger with a predilection for wearing
black and getting all crazy over a drop of blood would be walking
around with a neon sign flashing: VAMPIRE!
Jessica was adopted in Romania. Her
“birth parents had been ignorant, superstitious people duped into
joining a cult.” And her real name is Antanasia Dragomir. Jessica
is a very reluctant vampire princess and Lucius is her imperious,
privileged, arrogant, stick up his butt, royal, bethrothed.
Jessica and Lucius are definitely an
odd couple. Jessica is a farm girl while Lucius is aristocratic. And
Jessica is practical and rational. She doesn't believe in the
fantastical. Lucius pops his fangs twice and she still doesn't
believe in vampires.
Jessica is torn between her human
normal life with nice guy Jake and a world she knows nothing about, a
vampire Romanian royal with not so nice Lucius. Then there is the
mean girl at school and the bully who calls out the angry mob with
torches and pitchforks to add to the conflict.
Jessica's vegan, hippy parents are
really funny. A lot of this book, I thought, was really clever. This
is a very cute, young adult, vampire love story. I liked it a lot. 4
stars.
