Memories of Murder by Lara Nance Review ~Kami

Memories of Murder

by

Lara Nance grew up and lived in many cites throughout the South. She loves to write in a variety of genres, but the basis of all of her stories is a great tale that will take you on an adventure of imagination.
If you want to escape and lose yourself in a novel, you've come to the right place. Choose your genre and settle in to be entertained. From thrilling mysteries and steampunk tales to paranormal romance and adventure, she's willing to explore a variety of compelling stories full of danger and suspense, along with a touch of romance.
Her first paranormal romance, Memories of Murder, won RWA's New England Chapter's readers' choice award in 2012 for Best Paranormal Romance, as well as an award of merit as Best Book from a Virginia Author in the Holt Medallion contest. In 2013, her novel DraculaVille - Discovery in New York, won the Rudy award for best novel with romantic elements.
Lara's newest endeavor is under the name L.J.Nance, a children's book series titled: Lyra's Ocean World. The first book is out now: Lyra to the Rescue. The illustrator is Karen Webb.
Most of Lara's books are in print, electronic and audio format, with others soon to follow.
Having been on the fencing team in college and now living on a sailboat convinces her that she was a pirate in another life, or possibly kin to Errol Flynn... However, due to the unfortunate demise of the romantic pirates of the past, she lives out her fantasies, thrills and adventures in her stories. Lara loves to weave interesting true historical tidbits into her fiction which invite the reader to explore further after the novel is finished.
Currently docked in Norfolk, Virginia (until the wind changes) Lara enjoys living on her sailboat and spends time reading, of course writing, indulging a variety of artistic endeavors, cooking and sailing with her husband, Joe and their Yorkie, Rio.

MY REVIEW:

Maeve is a nurse witnessing a death on her first day at a new job. I have read two books by Lara Nance prior to this one, and I have to say that she is a really good writer. This story immediately drew my attention. From the first couple of pages, I was drawn to Maeve, I wanted to know more about her and the strange circumstances surrounding her. This is a fast paced story. This story hit a little close to home for me because my own mother has dementia. The mystery surrounding the graveyard and asylum becomes increasingly creepy and scary. Maeve is determined to uncover the truth. 4 stars.

A Riddle For Love by Lara Nance review ~Kami

A Riddle For Love

by

Blurb: She’s everything he ever dreamed of…

Dr. Avar Elsier has spent the past ten years developing the ideal human-like android for his company. In his spare time, he’s created the perfect persona for his dream woman that only needs the right body to make her real.

Unfortunately, such a body costs more than he possesses. When an emergency forces him to insert his “woman” into a unit designed for a high-paying customer, he falls in love and cannot bear to let her go.

Will he find a way to make their love last and escape from Mars before his secret is discovered or worse, the woman he loves is lost forever?

REVIEW:
Avar is a scientist, living on Mars, perfecting the perfect dream girl personality for an android. In the beginning I found this story offensive since the Sexy Girlfriend persona that Avar created is such a bimbo. Una is basically a blow up doll that walks and talks. I preferred Una's University Professor persona and so does Avar. But Avar's dream girl persona for Una is Lily, a sentient computer program. An interesting Weird Science meets Pygmalion story. 4 stars.

The Forgotten Ones (The Danaan Trilogy, #1) and Stone of Destiny (The Danaan Trilogy, #2) by Laura Howard review ~Kami

The Forgotten Ones (The Danaan Trilogy #1)

by Laura Howard

MY REVIEW

Allison is twenty-one and her mother suffers from schizophrenia. Her father who never knew of her existence shows up on her doorstep to see her ill mother. This is a short and fast read. The pacing feels a bit rushed but the writing is really good. I liked the characterization a lot. The story was interesting and it drew me in. Usually the first book of a trilogy is the weakest, but I thought this was a pretty good first installment. I am excited to read the next book. 4 stars.

Title: Stone of Destiny
Author: Laura Howard
Genre: New Adult Paranormal Romance
Hosted by: Lady Amber's Tours

Synopsis:Allison thought it was crazy enough when she found out her father, Liam, wasn't entirely human. But now she has to join his magical allies to unravel his former mistress's plans. Aoife wants to keep Allison's parents apart forever.

Stone of Destiny (The Danaan Trilogy #2)

by Laura Howard

MY REVIEW

Allison's mother is under a curse which makes her seem like she has schizophrenia. An evil fae has escaped. Allison is in love with Ethan but she can't seem to make that work out since Ethan's behavior has changed drastically to cruelty. Since the magical fae Deaghlan is fascinated by Allison, it seemed pretty obvious to me what was up with Ethan. It made me a bit frustrated that Allison was so oblivious to the possibility of what was really happening to Ethan. There was a lot of explanation and exposition in the beginning of the book with made it drag a bit. The writing is good but the pacing is sometimes slow in the beginning then it gets really fast paced towards the middle. The characters are interesting and the story held my interest. All in all a good story and I am ready for the conclusion to this saga. 4 stars.

The Chosen: Valkyrie Rising by Rae Z. Ryans Review ~Kami

The Chosen: Valkyrie Rising

by

Auriel is a human/phoenix hybrid. Her dreams are fraught with death and destruction that she causes. Liam is a Guardian and earth mage-lycan . Liam is also Auriel's prophesized soul mate. Jamie, his brother is the homosexual caught in a forbidden love affair with Nick. Liam has forgotten his time with Auriel but Jamie remembers. This is a really good story. Some of this story is very erotic and the sex scenes are explicitly written. It immediately drew me in. There was a lot going on in this book. This story takes Norse legend and runs with it. I was getting a very George R R Martin epic fantasy Song of Ice and Fire vibe, maybe because each chapter was from a different character's POV: Liam, Jamie and Auriel. I always think how hard this must be for an author to make each character's voice distinctly different and to keep all those characters in your head. This author has three distinct voices to juggle whereas George R R Martin has several more than that. George R R Martin is the master but this author did a really good job of writing multiple POV's. 5 stars.

New York City, NY 2014
Shades of death encircled my world. Tawny feathers floated from the sky. A gasp pinched my chest. Fire flashed on the horizon, bathing over the city, and then progressively swallowed the Nine Realms of the Myst. My eyes flew open, closed, reopened, and I drew my dream journal from the nightstand drawer.
“How can I stop myself from burning the world into cindered ash if I don’t understand this darkness tearing my light away?”
Each line and page filled with my prophetic visions. More than one existed and like those journals, this one reflected the darkness of my secret. Every night another nightmare assaulted me as the light inched from of my soul; they grew bolder, and the death toll rose. White cleansing fire coated the world as if it were air. I blinked the weariness away.
The visions always came true, no matter how hard I tried to change the fate of those I loved. Auburn hair brushed the page and deft fingers swept it aside. Dry and wet golden splatters marred the white surface. I prayed for answers, guidance, and a ceasefire without the universe blowing up in my face.
“Gods, what have I done to anger you?” Why did I destroy when all I wanted was love?
As usual, the Gods offered no response. I sniffled and wiped my face. Blank lines taunted, daring me to write the mysterious secrets of my worlds. This journal would be different. I would alter the future or die trying.
Pages as bare as the future I ran away from four years ago awaited my thoughts. Bacon fried downstairs; Momma whistled a tune. Where did I go wrong? My hand trembled, scribbling the words I didn’t want to admit. Twenty-one years was a piss in the ocean, yet little ol’ me managed to destroy the world. Daddy knocked on my bedroom door, and it creaked open.
“Mornin’ Aurie,” he said, stepping over the threshold carrying a mug of coffee. Timeless features chiseled his chin, elven ears pointed upward, and two blue eyes smiled as he set the cup on my nightstand. I forced my lips upward, returning the smile, and thanked him.
Daddy didn’t loiter and closed the door behind him. I waited as his footsteps pattered across the hardwood floor downstairs before I continued.
If someone asked me who would end the world, I would’ve said the humans. Before I ran, my job was protecting magic. All high mages enforced the Laws of the Myst. I was a Phoenix and master of elemental fire. At least I used to be before my family ventured into hiding.
The supernaturals I worked for turned on me. I tossed the pen down and refrained from chucking it across the bedroom. Knuckles cracked and my neck followed as I released the tension within my bones. The Council of the Nine despised my kind: hybrid. Hunted us down like rabid animals, all because we refused to live under their tyrannical control. I rolled from my bed, shuddering at living under the oppression of the Nine, and slipped into my favorite bunny slippers.
Hiding and fleeing were two things I learned at a young age, and it’s possible that I didn’t understand what normal meant, but I wanted it right alongside love. The doorbell chimed, and I glanced toward the bedroom door. Supernaturals were not normal. Shoulders slumped, I sipped my coffee and listened to the soft voices fluttering below. For one day, all I wanted was normality.
Truth settled in and chilled my bones. The warmth of the coffee penetrated my soul as I stared up at the white washed walls on our brownstone. Empty shelves lined my personal prison. Anything of importance fit into my duffel bag. Hot coffee, human television, and countless e-books filled my doldrum days. We rented the furniture and used delivery services for groceries. If I couldn’t order it and have it delivered, I did not need it. The pages of my journal flipped closed, as the chilly breeze swept through an open window.
My talisman warmed against my skin. I reached for my pillow and the muffled cries died as the stone swung away from my skin. The Algiz, runic symbol for protection, glowed as the amulet increased in strength, and the stone flared with life.
Ribs and heart ticked like a bomb waiting to explode. Eyes whipped around, searching for anything or anyone, to explain the sharp sear over my skin. I dropped my jaw, but nothing came out.
Shouts sounded in the distance, but the foreign words sounded muffled by the early Upper West Side noise. Voices rose from below as I tiptoed toward my closet and dragged my emergency bag from the shelf.
The Nine came for me; they found me. Pain and thinking didn’t mix. I paused, heart pounding within my ears, as the stairs creaked. Eyes glanced between the window and the door. Three sets of footsteps echoed their cadence.
The bag slung over my back, I wiggled my fat ass out the window and I crept down the rickety fire escape adhered to my bedroom window. My stomach flipped with each sway or groan from the metal as my sweaty palms glided over the railing. Did I stick to our plan, or fetch my parents first? This marked the first time in four years that I’d had to move; the first time, I’d ran as an adult.
The pendant scorched my skin as I descended the ladder that lead below into the alleyway. I winced and gnawed on the inside of my cheek as the tears built in my eyes. No supernatural was immune to pain.
Feet landed with a slight scuffle. The thumping of my heart vibrated through me, and breathe came in shortened gasps. Again, I gathered the talisman away from my skin. My gaze swept over the trash in the alleyway for signs of momma or daddy. Another shout drew my attention, and I struggled again to hear over the city noise. As the decibel grew stronger, I recognized the voice of my momma.
“We don’t know where she is.” Momma’s tone borderlined on hysterical, shrieking as if she were a sidhe.
Another voice matching hers resonated inside my head. “Run Auriel,” the voice commanded, but I froze.

Excerpt Three
I slowly blinked and shook myself. I turned the water off and pulled back the curtain just far enough to grab the towel. I wrapped it around my goosebump-covered torso and walked back to my cot, water dripping on the floor. Dirt and grit stuck to my wet feet. Normally, that would have grossed me out, but what was a little dirt compared to what was going to happen to me? Phoebe and Lily exchanged sorrowful looks. Phoebe came up behind me and gently towel dried my hair. I just sat there, completely still except for the shivering. “Here,” Lily offered and held out a robe. Holding the towel up with one hand, I snaked my arms through the crushed velvet robe and tied it around myself. "I don't get your tattoos," she said and tipped her head. "Theban," I simplified and looked at the squiggly characters that surrounded a triple moon symbol my left shoulder blade. "It's an old alphabet. It’s from a book." "Oh." Lily nodded. "What about that one? It's a circle inside a triangle with a line through it?" "From another book," I summed up, looking at the tattoo on my wrist. I had one more tattoo on my left side. I parted the robe to show her. "Get this one?" "Nope. 'To infinity'," she read. "Don't get it." "'And beyond'," Phoebe finished. "I like Toy Story. Who has other half?" "My best friend, Lynn," I told her, my voice hollow. "You must miss her," Lily said quietly. I bit my lip and nodded. Lily looked at me for a few seconds, her blue eyes flashing with emotions. She closed them, shook her head, and put on a small smile. “Rochelle will do your makeup,” she said. I nodded and rose from the cot and made my way over to the makeshift vanity. Rochelle was leaning on the counter, keeping the weight off of her injured ankle. I sat on a rickety stool and faced the mirror. It was the first time I had allowed myself to look at my face since I’d been taken. I had bruises on my face from being hit by Nate and Zane. My right eye was swollen a little on the outside. I knew I had bruises on my body, both from being beaten and from the trunk ride to wherever the hell we were. “You have nice skin,” Rochelle told me. “It’ll be easy to work with.” She said it in such a way that it wasn’t a compliment. Before she started on my makeup, she brushed and blow dried my hair and set it in curlers. Then she spun me around so that I couldn’t see in the mirror anymore. I flinched from the cold liquid foundation she smeared over my cheeks. If I had such nice skin, why did she feel the need to cover it all up? I rarely wore makeup at home. If I did, I focused mainly on my eyes, having fun playing with different colors of eye shadow and liners. I hated the way foundation felt caked onto my face. “There,” she said, sounding satisfied. She had been working on me for what had to be at least half an hour. She took the curlers out of my hair, and after a while of fluffing and spraying enough hair spray to eat away a layer of the O-zone, she leaned back and pressed a smile, nodding as she admired her work. I turned and looked in the mirror. My eyes were heavily outlined in silver and black. The bruises were gone, though my right eye still looked tender. Red blush on my cheeks made it look like I was permanently embarrassed, and the dark red lipstick was just … trashy. My hair was teased and was inches away from my head. It was coated in so much hair spray that it barely moved with me. Big, wavy curls cascaded around my face. Suddenly, a smile cracked my face, and a snort of laughter escaped my lips. “What?” Rochelle demanded. I shook my head, the humor in my grossly stereotyped appearance quickly fading. Rochelle glared at me for a moment longer before waving me away. She hobbled to the rack of clothing and skimmed through the section of lingerie. She pulled a short, silky nightgown from its hanger. It was dark purple, with black lace outlining the top and bottom. My stomach churned when my fingers touched the shiny material. “You’ll need this,” she mumbled and tossed me a push-up bra. “Your boobs are on the small side.” She shook her head and sighed. “Whatever. I’ll make it work. You should gain some weight.” I held my arms close to my body, feeling very self-conscious. I was thin due to an over-active thyroid. Over the years, I had tried different medications but was unable to find something with a good balance so I just stopped taking the pills. I always had eaten more than enough, but I just couldn’t keep the weight on. It had been one of my number one pet peeves to be told I was lucky I was thin. I had a medical condition that took a toll on my body and my health. How lucky is that? “Tonight you have Travis,” Rochelle began explaining. “Give him a good show. He likes to watch.” My stomach clenched and the sting of sour vomit bubbled in my throat. I felt like my head was being shoved into a bucket of dirty water, and no matter how hard I struggled, I couldn’t get out, couldn’t take a breath. “I don’t know any good shows,” I mumbled. “What?” Rochelle asked and wrinkled her nose. “Well, you do now,” she went on, widening her eyes and giving me the girl-you’re-crazy stare. She shook her head and sighed. “Just follow his lead, do what he wants, and you’ll be fine.” Nerves audibly grumbled through my intestines. I feared something was going to come out one end or the other. Yet I just stood there, my mind wanting to shut down and refuse to process what was going to happen. There was no way around it. I was going to go upstairs. I was going to go into a room with a sick and twisted man who would force me to have sex with him. Or I could refuse. And that would get me severely beaten, if not killed. For a few seconds, dying seemed better than getting raped. I shook my head at the thought. I wasn’t going to give up. Today might not be my day for escaping, but it would come. It had to.
